Dear All,

I write this with a heavy heart. My amplifier has given out again.
This time the damage is pretty serious.

One of the transformers seem to have gone kablooie....

the entire cabinet was billowing with smoke when i opened the top...
Its going to be a long long time before i get it up and running again...i.e if at all i decide to do.

Warm Regards,
Sachi

Sorry to hear that....

Was this the DIY Gainclone you had built, which initially had a Hum problem ?

Sorry to hear the news....

Its the very same one amp nut...
this time though i am plannig to do either one of these things..

1>convert the active into a passive speaker which calls for extensive crossover design in which i am a novice.

2>replace the transformer and the ones that are working with one single 1Kva toroidal tranny(from Miracle) and seperate the power supply from the amplifier chassis...

Both require extensive work...will need to decide on the course of action..
am currently leaning towards a passive setup..

I don't suppose that the amplifier modules have been destroyed...they seem intact.

Hey buddy, when did that happen ???
Its really sad, if you have to dismantle your setup and convert it into something else (Passive) that too after all this hard work.

Somehow I tend to adsuggest you to go ahead with the Passive thing...atleast you would be able to use the speaker in case of a amp running into trouble or the vice versa...that somewhat justifies both the money spent as well as your hard work

Check out the amp Modules.
ICs are Very fragile, and often give up the ghost at the slightest provocation. The Only way I can think of, for the transformers to have blown, is that the rectifiers failed or the trnasformers were in a wooden box, and overheated.

My call, if the amp modules are OK, would be to change the transformers Only, .... with multiple ones like you are currently using ( but good quality, not the market-off-the-shelf ones.

What you are using, are Good quality ones ? Or something off the shelf ?

A single transformer would mean one with multipole taps, to cater to the different voltages for the different power gainclones....

Ah !

I Think I know what blew the transformers.....

Your UPS.

And its not really the Sine wave the manufacturer claims it to be....

The only silver lining in this case would be that the rest of your Home made amp would be intact, except probably the rectifiers....

Do use the UPOS on a Linear power supply based device. Change yr transfo, to 1 big one or multiple smaller ones....( a single big one will be more cost effective) as long as U dont use the UPS

Would be interesting to have yr feedback on this one...

Thanks

Hey amp nut..

no its not the UPS..
The fault was in a stray strand of thin wire(almost invisible) which seems to have shorted the capacitors on the mids/highs..
This seems to have shorted out the transformer.

The other transformer( from the same manufacturer)one is working fine.

Thanks for that feedback !

I guess that feedback, will also answer yr previous question.... a single new Transfo or to stay with multiple transfos...

Since some of yr Transfos have survived.... replace only the blown ones and stay multiple.

So yr UPS IS a sine wave UPS.

Just for other forum members, the ONLY way to be sure that the UPS delivers Sine waves, is to see its waveform on an oscilloscope.

Incidentally, did the Gainclone ICs survive ?

Some of the gain clones did survive...but a couple...maybe 3 look iffy...would do good to change all three of them.
