Tannoy Monitor Gold Active Crossover

Hi,

Here are pictures of my new interest.This is an active crossover board for the Tannoy Dual Concentric loudspeakers, and is a group project with some members of the Tannoy Yahoo Groups.

The crossover is based on the design by John Ridley.It is designed specifically for the Tannoy Monitor Golds and HPD's.

This was actually a two year project while the group had the boards made and components sourced.Soldering the components especially the SMD's was a pain.I have to be truthful and admit that the SMD's were soldered on by a friend who is an electronic wiz.I just about managed to solder the regular components without messing up the board.

The problem now is to find a suitable enclosure for the board .When the board was designed, Farnell had a enclosure suited for this board but now they dont stock it .Does any one know where I will be able to find a suitable enclosure?

I have tried out the crossover with the Tannoys .I used the Dynaco MK III's for the LF and the Quad II/II for the HF . The sound is certainly better than with the regular passive crossover.The biggest difference is the openess,clarity and dynamics.

Next will be to build bigger cabinets for the Tannoys.The present cabinets are the smallest factory cabinets Tannoy produced(100 ltrs)These speakers need at least 200ltrs to perform.I have the factory plans for the GRF and Autograph cabinets but building them is out of the question .They are huge and I might find myself living in them if my wife finds out that I am contemplating building them.

As usual benchmark stuff from you.

Such as shame you can’t put some oil caps in there. What opamps are you using? I have a bunch of usual suspects (phokat samples) in case you need.

Did you check out RS for the cab? Or if you can give me your design I can try and have something fabricated. It won’t be as pretty though.

QUAD-II is just right for the HF. Somehow I never got them to perform forceful at the LF range. Maybe something to do with the smallish output transformer.

What kind of a PSU you are using for these ?

Wow the quad two must be singing with these.

I remember hearing lovely music from the quad two with the quad 11L speakers. Though a little light in the bass as you mentioned aks, they did well with the small bookshelves. Aks have you tried them with your new horns ?

No I haven’t. One of the monoblock is under restoration and the other one is currently residing inside a Gerard consol playing mono.

But Rajiv has put them to just right use. QUAD II will excel in a position where it is asked to contribute only mids and highs. IMHO of course.

Ashok,Manek thank you for your mails.

Ashok,I will try RS and some local suppliers.If I do not get the enclosure I will send the design to you.

The OPAmps I use are the AD8610.

The Quads are bass shy as you rightly point out .Their best atributes really shine through when not asked to deliver the lows.

The power supply is quite simple.I put in a 15-0-15 /500ma transformer into a dead wall wart with a bridge rectifier and about 2200 mfd to get the dc supply to the board.The power is fed to the board through the DIN connector.
The supply is regulated on the board, and uses a couple of zenners and 7812/7912 transistors for regulation.
