Hi all, Been playing around with finolex and other brands of wires to make DIY power cords..... One very nice revelation.....for cdp's and preamps....surprisingly the finolex 1.5sq mm 3 wire braided config works exceedingly well...and dirt cheap ! its only when one uses power amps or integrateds does 4 sq mm really make a bit of a difference. Polycab is a no no on all counts ! Have tried other local shielded(lam road) 3 core wires as well but are of no use. Even the thicker variety 4-6 sq mm sounds the same as a stock PC. Wish finolex made solid core wires.... Anyone know of solid core mains wires made by local companies with good copper quality ? Manek. |

Hi Manek, VERY interesting. Can you provide details of how you made the mains cable with finolex 1.5sq mm 3 wire braided wire > Is this a braided mains cable ? Where did you buy it ... Lohar Chawl or Lamington Road ? Did you strip the external sheath and plait the 3 braided wires ? Thanks for sharing. |

hi ampnut... finolex cable of 1.5 sqmm was bought from a finolex cable dealer, kemps corner, single wire(multi stranded). IEC plugs(elcom) and brass 3 pin plugs. I took 3 lengths of 2 mts each and braided them, each braided twist is approx 1 cm in length. very balanced presentation is what I found. dont expect it to change things drastically ! The 4 sq mm works a shade better with p-amps/integrateds. enjoy. manek. |

Hi Manek, 1. When you say 'Braided them" are you referring to plaiting them as what women do their hair ? 2. Or are you referring to getting a thin wire mesh / shield put around each wire... as done in shielded wires ? Thanks P.S: If you are referring to 1. above, and since you are anyway using Multi strand wire, maybe you can try with OFC speaker cable available at Lamington Road ? I guess the OFC will be pretty high purity copper. |

Tried number 1. good results for the price tried number two as well but with a single tin braided shield over all three wires with shield connected at the wall plug end to earth. both gave near similar results. Now I want to try good quality solid core. i tried the local variety solid core(used as earthing wire in homes) and it was as good as 1. BTW, I did think of using OFC spkr wire but most of the insulation is good for just around 250 volts...very dicey i would think. BTW I really wonder if most of the spkr wire available at lam road is "OFC"???. BTW I did check a few high end spkr cables to see thier insulation properties and the highest was 280-300V. I thought I was playing with fire. Manek. |

Ah yes.... I also tried a twisted pair config for line and neutral with a separate earth wire....that seemed to work better but havent tried that with the finolex wires. Thats next. Manek. |
