Chennai has offered me a treasure of great live music experiences.
1. Western classical: Piano duet by Fareed Curmally and a foreign pianist: A great experience with a sophisticated audience. My intro to live classical music.

2. Jazz: Madhav Chari trio with 2 French musicians on drums and bass and Madhav on piano: My intro to live jazz. The conversation between the paino and the drums was simply fantastic. The music was live and kept me riveted. The energy was phenomenal.

3. Folk: Accordeonist and singer Regis Gizavo and drummer-percussionist David Mirandon: A fantastic intro to the music of Madagascar. Combining African rhythms with French sophistication, this was a great experience in which we participated with Regis in the development of the musical experience.

4. Rock: Mademoiselle K: This female rocker was classically trained and so produced some great riffs. However, it had all the ills of modern rock: amps driven to distortion, noise over melody, etc. Thankfully, I carried my earplugs.

5. Jazz and Dance: Madhav Chari teamed up with a Tai-Chi dancer. Madhav really knows how to play the piano. Enjoy his style and pace. What would Chennai be without him?

What's all this leading to?

A great and successful evening filled with the most delightful music. Thanks to 2 Music Masters and my Chennai friend.

Thangadorai Samuel (guitarist and piano player) and Balakrishnan (flute and recorder player) and 5 of their students gave fine performances.
Music of many composers: Schubert and several Spanish composers were played.
Some of the music included:
1. Recorder solo
2. Three guitar piece
3. Guitar and flute duet
4. Piano and guitar duet
5. Flute duet

The highlight was acoustic un-amplified music allowing us to appreciate the natural rythms of the guitars and the soaring highs of the wind instruments.

I would suggest that forum members offer their homes for live concerts by deserving talented musicians. It will to mutual benefit as LIVE far exceeds the quality of the Rs 1 crore audio setups!

On Saturday 21st Sept, the Signum Quartett from Germany played at the Music Academy in Chennai, courtesy Max Mueller Bhavan.

Signum Quartett:
Violine: Kerstin Dill, Annette Walther
Viola: Simon Tandree
Cello: Thomas Schmitz

Unfortunately, the organisers didn't give a printout of the composers and pieces. I understood that they played the works of Mozart, Haydn, and Robert Schumann. The violin pieces were mostly very beautiful and played with a great deal of skill. The Signum Quartett are true musicians and totally involved in their music. They played unamplified and faced each other so that they could give each other cues. I was on the 2nd row of the balcony and could watch their every movement. They mentioned that one of the composers was schizophrenic. Sounded all the better. One piece by a modern composer had a crazy tempo, which I didn't take to.

To sum up, I am really grateful to the Signum Quartett for initiating me into the magic of violins. Do attend their shows, if they visit your cities.

Hi Neutral !

Welcome to the world of live unamplified western classical music !!! It's an addiction that you just can't succumbing to.

Signum Quartet were supposed to perform in Delhi in early September but I belive that the concert got cancelled. I got the information only on the last day, so I would have missed it anyways. But if they come to Delhi again, I'm sure to attend.

Sunday fun:
Carnatic:
I attended 2 Carnatic concerts early evening on Sunday at YGP auditorium in T Nagar Chennai. The first one was a flute recital by a 11-yr boy Visweshwar backed up by a violin and a tabla. Amazed that such a young person can play so many tunes for a full 1 hour.
This was followed by a Carnatic vocal concert with backing by violin and tabla.
I enjoyed the instruments more than the vocals, which to me were too strident.

Jazz:
I then walked down to the 'Park' hotel in Nungambakkam to attend the Fun Horns concert organised by the Max Mueller Bhavan. This Berlin-based jazz horns quartet consists of:
Volker Schlott (saxophone & flute)
Falk Breitkreux (saxophone & bass clarinet)
Jorg Huke (trombone)
Rainer Brennecke (trumpet)

These guys played mostly new tunes, which were unknown to me. This is the first time that I have attended an all-horns session and it was an interesting experience. Unlike the common perception of horns as aggressive, these musicians were focusing on melody and pleasant strains. No attempts to show off or blow your brains away. A very pleasant evening made better by the beautiful poolside location, comfortable floor furnishings and a great view from the 8th floor.

In this informal setting, the musicians roamed around and played at our places. Very unlike, a stiff concert setting. And did I mention that the hotel bar provided an 'on the rocks' experience with barbecue too.

Do give the contact details of the Mehli Mehta Music Foundation. Bombay, sure is a hot place to be. But, getting to the NCPA is a hassle. Travelling in Chennai is so much easier and there is at least one concert each month!

If one works in Andheri (where most software jobs are located), it does take one hell of a long time to reach the NCPA! Yes, facilities are good once you get there. Sad to say, traffic in Bombay crawls. For us, it would be alot easier if we could attend shows in the Bandra-Andheri area.
