Dear folks,

I have seen many threads, posts about dealers and most were about ripping them off about price, service, attitude, ,loud mouthed etc..There have been bruised ego's, relationship's ruined forever, wedges driven between good deals etc...But there are good ones too aren't they so lets discuss about dealers who have really gone out of their way to help you..Put down instances when without their help and guidance you wouldn't have had that glittering audio set up and hear music in it's truest sense you have ever beleived it to be. Please do put your experiences down and make this thread an eye opener for newbies...

Cheers and good luck

Ok, for me there were two dealers.

1) Jacob Koshy(Bombay J&B) - Always had a patient ear for me. I would go to his shop many a time just to sit an listen and pick up pointers and he has always been forthcoming in his hospitality, advice and opinions.

2) Mahendra Dave(Oceianic Sound Pune) - Honestly, I have pestered this man a lot :-). Always been greeted with a warm welcome and a smile. We have had many listening sessions and many a discussion, always willing to experiment. Never once has this he ever tried to sell anything to me. Its always me who has gone back to him for more. He is one of my best my sources for good music, the kind I like. What good is a system without music ?

PS : I have to mention Deaf here as well. One setup of his was magic for me...that was the manger(bookshelf) along with the nad silverline electronics, extremely enjoyable, so much so that in that room at that moment soundstaging, imaging and other attributes of audiophilia just didnt matter and I didnt care to even notice. It was music all the way.

PS2 : Cadence - During delivery(approx 5 yrs ago), the sales manager and production manager both brought my set of speakers home, installed them for me, gave me a brief about their company, invited me over to their factory for a tour(which I did go for) and explained the finer points of the speaker and its manufacture, set it up for me. I never expected this kind of service and warmth especially when I had bought their entry level model.

Interesting Manek,
Bhagwan had a different opinion. He preferred the larger Manger, the one you did not care much for.Audio is truly about different thought procesess.

That is true 'DEAF'

Case [a] had NAD Silverline + Manger 109

Case [b] had Gamut [Pre + Power] + Teac Esoteric [P70 + D70] + Manger 103/3

I had not liked [a] at all & you had won the 'sound of the show'

I had loved [b] & you never won, B & W got the 'best sound of the show' !!!!!

But, I guess that is how things are at times, but in case [b] the set up was really nice, it was one of the best 'Tutti' I had heard [after Rockport & Krell LAT 1].
Besides to be able to fit that 103/3 from Manger in that small room, was a great job, well done !!!!

BTW, if I am not mistaken, Jacob was the dealer for Cadence in Bombay ? Does he still carry Cadence / Siltec ?
Or has he become Soundsmiths 'exclusive' dealer for Mumbai ????

I like Jacob, he is a nice fellow !!!! I like him even more because he and Marbin do not get along !!!
[sorry about that - below the belt] I may have to edit this post;

Yes deaf,
you are right...the setup [B] I just did not like too much at all.
Setup [a] to me was in a sense "musical".

Hey has nobody had good experiences with any dealer..OK so do I assume that my assumption based on conclusions made from most here in the past with respect to their experiences with dealers is what anybody would expect.....

I would live to comment;

However, I do not want to start any more controversies here.

We have had too many in the past & they tend to turn 'ugly' more often than not.

I shall reserve my comments on this front; sorry !

Hey Thanks SUB_BOSS for creating this thread. I have been long thinking to acknowledge the person due to whom today I am in a different world. Its Junia Alva for me. He has extended tremendous amount of support to me in getting my hifi.
It was like, without him it wouldnt have been possible.

First he invited me to take the system to my residence and listen to it for a week or so. The evaluation period almost extended to more than a month and I was given the flexibiity to either keep it or return it at any point of time during this period unconditionally.
I was then allowed to compare between Plinius 8100 and 8200 MKII for more than a week to see which one I like better.

All this thing went on for around one and half months, all the time me having the discretion to select it or reject it.

During this time Junia himself visited my place to help me look into the acoustic issues and its remedies.

All this associated with a tremendous VFM offer is not something I had ever expected. Fortunately this is my first hifi purchase and look at the experience I had. What else can I ask for. Yes, I could ask for one more thing which Junia again gave me readily, I couldnt pay the amount in one shot, so I asked him if I could pay him in installments, he readily agreed and I was immediately allowed to pay the amount in few installments. Now do I call this a deal or a boon!! Whatever it is, its due to JUNIA.

Today I dont even worry about warranty...with a person like Junia ready to support me, I feel like having a lifetime warranty

Prithvi also needs a mention here. When we visited him, he genuinely showed a lot of interest in our ideas rather than merely pushing a product to us. He asked us a lot of questions on our taste in music, listening habits, listening environment, budget etc. before demoing his products.

He was also very enthusiastic about showing his wares just like any audio enthusiat would be. He even showed us his personal system.

When I told him about the second option I had on the amp, he honestly admitted that it was a better one instead of defending his product.

In toto, he really came across as an audio advisor rather than a dealer. Even though I did not end up buying any of my components with him, I would feel very comfortable in approaching him for anything audio and expect the same level of enthusiastic response. We do need people like him if we are to grow the community in this country...

Hi Manek,
Yes it was a big plus. All throughout every other product that I liked sonically seemed always out of my reach budget wise.
Here it was the opposite...I never longed for such high end products, but today its playing at my residence...

hi all
i remember once when i ordered a speaker costing 35k for my client and this was damaged in transport.the customer could not wait &on my request my supplier shipped a new pair imdtly as replacement.
i have also got good advice from a customer.he found the acoustics in my store quite bad as there is a lot of glass around with plain walls.i told him that i was aware of this but customers need demos this way.they prefer listening to an untreated room.they would feel that the sound is good because of the room acoustics.maybe will treat the room sometime later.so boss ,actually we are in a difficult trade where we need to concentrate on sales for the time being and think about acoustics later.what do u say sub boss

Hey Prithvi let me also mention your name here.. How can I forget you and the help you've rendered by lending amps to me and never meant to push it and always gave me demo's of good systems you knew very well I wasn't intersted in buying.. Off lately you are maintaining a low profile why is that so??.

These things suffixed to your name has just baffled me..

though this is an old post i'd like to add my two bit.

1. viren - though i'm still to buy an amp from him, all my interactions with him have left a very very good feel. i think he really understands that normal people like me do take some time to get around to buying. patient in answering to queries. pity he's in delhi. knowledgeable guy who doesnt faff his way around.

2. designer audio - lovely demo room unlike some other dealers who talk more. could take my time there.

3. prithvi seems to be more than happy to have you over. i specifically asked him if i could listen to epos which i'm considering and other stuff i'm not going to able to afford for some time. he was more than welcoming.

4. the guy at bandra, jacob?... he was never there when i dropped in but man what a lovely room. his helper just put it on, handed me the remote and let me listen without any sales patter or standing over me.

The other day when I dropped in at Prithvi's I asked him that I was really surprised that no one had picked upthe Epos M5 which according to me is outstanding VFM.
Prithvi's attitude to this sums up my experience of him.
He said 'what saddens me is that no one takes time to audition and listen to new things, even when they are available here in India. I dont care if they dont buy...just listen and experience.'
I like that attitude.

hi jeeves,

interesting that u mention the epos m5s as vfm cos i went to the website and the way they describe it, it's primarily for home theatre, and also does good audio. so the primary focus of the designers seem to be ht. considering the response is from around 58 or was it 60, a sub would be really handy, confirming (to me) that it seems meant for ht duty. could u elaborate on ur impression of it cos i was interested in listening to them and the 12.5s.

thanks

Stevie,

These days you'll find most of the so-called VFM brand positioning themselves as HT products rather than stereo...guess the idea is to drive up the volume sales which seems to be more in the HT area in that price range.

I have heard the M5 and IMO its really a good speaker...wonder why there are no takers...is is because of its boxy looks???
