hi guys,
i'm currently looking to take the next steps in my setup. first i plan to add a sub and then the center. while reading reviews for subs i came across the svs subs which have got rave reviews frm all round. they are us-based online retailers and on emailing them i also found that they'll ship to bombay, where i stay.
the reason that their subs excite me is that for a very decent $429 their pb10-isd is a 10" sub with 300w amp which goes down all the way to 18hz!
their email says that it'll be abt 150-175$ shipping (by Bax) but all other customs, brokerage etc will be additional. thats the problem. do u guys think its worth the risk? anyone had experience or idea as to how much shld i expect duties etc to add up to.
the sub is alot beyond my initial budget (20-25K max) but in this case, with the capabilities, it might be worth the extra.
another prob is the lack of service backup but that is something i'm sceptical abt - who knows what kind of service i'll get with local dealers if i was to buy a sub frm them. small probs might get fixed but waht abt big ones.
lastly, anyone heard sanen acoustics subs??

thanx once again, u guys are great help always.

hey....this is the last thing I would do in India...buy a sub online and have it shipped. You will go thru a lot of pain clearing it from customs, paying duties close to about 60% ?

And then what if it lands here damaged....who will you turn to then ? Seriuosly...please buy subs locally so that there is some hope of support.

By the way going down to 18hz is not the end all or be all of a subs capabilities...nor should a sub be evaluated that way. The key to my evaluatiing a sub is how fast is the sub ? is it distorting the bass timing of the music as most subs do....is it muddy...is it overly boomy for the room...do....etc etc etc...and to know all that you need to demo a sub and specially in your room with your system.

my two bits.

Are you building a HT or a 5 channel Music.

IF it is music, what manek says about specs is very correct. Also only Organ music and very few rock recordings ever go belo 25 hz.

If for HT, SVS & HSU (The Cylindrical) are the best in business..the experiece is amazing. but be prepared to go thru customs as well as Warranty issues as manek has correctly pointed out

But do look at your Room size. Most of these are meant for American Rooms maybe of the size 20 X 20 and bigger. In most Indian Conditions usually a sub having a 10" driver and a amp of around 150 W is more than enough..

Eg a REL Quake or better still a REL 150 are very good.

Even Velodyne has a great sub at lest than 1 feet high..forgot the model tho..

hi guys,
i guess u'll r right. i too thought it was impratical but the reviews and the specs-to-price ratio of the svs was what really attracted me.
i'm looking to buy a sub for my setup on which the ratio wld be 50%music 50%movies. my room is abt 225 sq.ft.
frm a little preliminary enquiry i've narrowed it down to these potential subs which wld fit in my budget -
1) sanen acoustics sn-60 for 15K
2) psb subzeroi for 19k
3) wharfedale sw-150 (dont know exact price but arnd 20k)
4) klipsch rw-10 for 23k
5) MS 309 for 25k (frm chennai's audio people)

so far have only managed to hear the sanen which sounded pretty decent (esp. compared to space audio which was highly boomy). if nothing else i might go for that and save some dough which i can use for my centre.

i'm in the process of auditioning these (except for the ms309 which i wld hv to buy blindly based on reviews since its frm a chennai co.)

also i dont know how much to trust the in-store auditions as they wld all be in different demo rooms and setup very differently and i've read that most subs depend on room acoustics and need to be setup well. unforrtunately no one in bombay gives u the facility of in-house demos. so i'll hv to depend on a mix of reviews, cost, what i feel abt the demo, and of course u guys so let me know what u think.

thnx

for HT, the PSB and the Klipsch provide great rocking power. with the PSB having an edge in control (For music) and the klipch for the ability to knock your socks off

Honestly have not heard them..but the sonodyne specs were not particularly awe inspiring...

BTW did hear that Yamaha subs are are suprisingly good..also do check out Onkyo..
But for Primarily HT and also if you do more listening to TV & VCDs rather then DTS/Dolby 5.1 DVDs then i presume the Indian subs should be more than good enough...
