I have a ROTEL 1062 intergrated amp (£600) connected via QED XT-350 speaker cable with airloc plugs to new series CASTLE DURHAM speakers (£400) on apollo AZ fully welded stands. My source's are an old ROTEL 855 CD player and a MICHELL SYNCRO with an ORTOFON 520 MM cart. I am totally fed up with hi-fi, most of the time its sounds flat with no dynamics or sparkle. I keep trying every thing to find that bit of magic. I have tried moving the speakers, the system you name it! Every so often however..it does sound good. The last time was a couple of days ago. I moved the speakers further apart and it came alive. The sound stage grew bigger, there was more depth, more clarity, everything got smoother, instruments had more air and hung mid air in front of me. The treble sparkled, it was dynamic, punchy and was just thrilling to listen to. All the adjectives that people use to describe the sound were all there. I thought wow! it was speaker placement all along! I had a great day and night just listening. Alas!!! Couple of days later the magic has gone! I seem to have a good hi-fi day once every 3 weeks or so. It sounds really strange, but is it possible that i am getting very polluted electricity that is wrecking the sound? Most dealers have thought it highly unlikely. I might add that i live in a block of flats in the middle of town. Please help somebody!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Hmm.if not the power, it might be you !! I mean good music is more emotional than anything else.. Why dont you try one thing. List down all Noticable characteristics that you like in your music like Soundstage, High freq responnse, dynamics, BASS respose, imaging etc etc . each day try to mark if you find all of it in what you listen to. In case that varies, it has to be the power supply, or even the weather. sometimes music during some times may not sound very good especially as equipment like Microwaves/Washing machines/vacuum cleaners etc which consume power andd make the power supply quite transient could be on. eg the microwave used to make my soundsysstem a bit drab and lacking the punch !! But If that is constant..then it is the more emotional aspect which is varying..and for that you would be the best judge hope this was of some help.... |

thanks for your reply. All the characteristics that i like were listed in my post. Anyway i think you know instinctively if it sounds right. If it right you just forget being analytical and jst enjoy the music, which is what i want to do. i just want to know if its possible that it really could be the supply of electricity. Has anyone had the same experience? |

electricity or just could be once in a while you use well recorded stuff. if it is electricity then one can use a power conditioner to see if the sound quality is constant. |
