I attended the AKFEST-08 in Detroit,on 3rd April,08.
It was a great experience, for me.
Have taken some snaps, will post my experience soon.
It will not be a review in any sense, since I had to cover so much of ground in one day.
Hopefully some reviews on the AKFEST will be out soon, on ezines.
Thanks.

HI
A link to a audio fest of a different kind.

http://www.6moons.com/industryfeatures/oswaldmill08/oswald.html

I find myself heading down this path for some time now.

I am attaching pictures of my Altecs .These are similar cabinets to the ones pictured on the site but not tapered. The woofers are Altec 515B's.
They are a different take on the Onken cabinets, and Bill Woods the designer has been very helpful. The HF section in my loudspeakers are Altec 288-16G.The Hf horn is a 700Hz conical horn prototype. If this conical geometry works for me then I will use the same profile and make circular horns. I have tried multicells and radial horns but they do not work well in normal living rooms.

Still experimenting with the crossovers(1200Hz).Thanks to Ashok(aks07) for the NOS oil caps. They are way better than the other caps I have tried(Solens,Hovland). I will use better resistors/wire once the crossover is finaly tuned.

I would love to make the big 300Hz horns since I have the RCA MI9584 drivers that go with them ,but my children and wife might kick me out of the house.

The Altecs are 98db at 1 watt. I am using the QUAD II/II at present and am awaiting the arrival of Viren's 2A3 SET.

Regards
Rajiv

Hi Rajiv,

You really are deep into vintage horns. I haven't heard any, but I'm sure they sound much better than current day horns. I've only heard Avantgarde's, but they did nothing for me.

Would love to have that high a sensitivity speaker system. Also, would love to have that big of a listening space!

The 2A3 SET amp is almost ready to ship. I'm listening to it for a few days just to make sure it performs well.

Hi Viren

Thats great news on the 2A3 SET. Do you find a difference using the bigger Black Gates?

Please email me before you ship the amp as am travelling during the third and fourth week of this month.

Vintage horns done right are like SET amps. You have to hear them to find out for youself.

Hi Rajiv

Good to see your Horn pics here. Together with the 2A3 amp they will do magic I am sure.

Right now listening to a prototype 10Y triode SE amp driving a pair of vintage Philips full rangers in open baffle. Nirvana

BTW your BG’s have broken in quite beautifully.

You are making me jealous. Those globe tubes are supposed to be the ultimate triode. Please post a picture of your amps.

Your oil caps in the speaker crossover are really fantastic.Let alone the CTR'S they sounded better than the Hovland's I tried.I found the other BG'S sent some to Viren, will send you a couple more.

Hi,
1.In fact I was so mesmarized by the Horns from
http://www.classicaudiorepro.com
It's hard to believe the lifelike quality of the music reproduced.
The T-1 horns(300 lbs each) played by Atmasphere OTL monoblocs, that was pure heaven. It was breathtaking music to say the least.
I think they(T-1's) were tagged 17000 USD a pair, not sure though.People were just closing the eyes and enjoying the bliss. What a music...

2. Then there was Harbeth 40.1(what can being driven by Belles MB01 solid state monoblocks.http://www.powermodules.com 75 W of pure class A beasts. Sheer sense of ease, naturalness, absolute absence of any negative virtues of solid state, very very natural music.
To me they sounded better than McIntosh MC2301(Tube monoblocks) driving McIntosh XRT1K speakers.Sounded slightly bright/edgy.

Will continue...
