Has anyone heard the Rega Apollo CDP ? how does it compare sonically to the planet ?

I have had the opportunity to listen to / audition the Opera CD 120 L many a times.

http://www.opera-consonance.com/products/refcd22linear.htm

Low - Mid Fi @ best.

Very average sounding.

I much prefer the Rega's to it.

I would not recommend them to anyone.

From what I have heard of it, better not to compare the Appollo to the Planet or Jupitor.. it a completely different desing/transport and output stage.. in short a different cdp

it did have a couple of problems initially but apparently is all fixed now. I think AA had a couple of goood discussions on it.

Edit :Even the Jupitor is supposed to be revamped to something new on the same lines.

Hi Bhagwan,
Could you be a bit more specific please? These non-oversampling players seems to be quite a hit with lot of audiophiles and are getting good reviews all over. It would be nice to hear some specific observations about them.

I have the Jupiter. I haven't heard the Planet. Sam Tellig feels the Planet is one of he best buys in hi-fi @ around $900. The Jupiter costs twice that. But according to Stereophile the dynamics are much better than the Planet.
I like the sound of the Jupiter compared to the Marantz CDPS I've had before.
Incidentally the Jupiter is gone...Saturn is thier top end model.

Hi !

Do you stay in Bombay ? If so, I can make you have a listen;

Then you may decide.

Below par is all I can say.

Maybe a Nad entry level CD Player will put it to sleep.
I am not kidding.

Rega does not have any distributor / dealer in India.
Hence, no prices are available.

It used to be sold by Soundsmiths earlier @ 20 % above British List [asking].
They may still be there with them, I am not sure. Maybe used / demo pieces.

However, Apollo will surely not be there.

I did find the Rega's to be great VFM Players.

I got it if I remember right for around 80k+. I wish Soundsmiths had continued the distribution but Aditya told me their expectations were unrealistic...something like a minimum order of 100? per order lot. The misconception of the 300 million middle class in India!
A quick observation on external differences between the Planet and Jupiter and the Apollo and Saturn...the high end models have heatsinks underneath which kinda of make them difficult to lift! ..but easy to spot.

hmmm....most companies tend to have unrealistic expectations. Middle class has expendable income, which is a reality but they should choose to spend on a cdp Boomboxes and bose rule here

You could try adding a Channel islands audio VDA2 599 24bit DAC to your existing Nad player.
http://www.ciaudio.com/vda2.html
It comes highly recomended by Modright.

Sold in India by Anil.
Def Tech & Legacy Audio & Parasound Distributor.

You may call him on 98201 86108.

Mr. Srivastava sells Shanling in India. He used to keep his goods on demo @ La Kozy. No Shanling now, but his Parasound Halo JC-1's are doing service with the Jamo 909, worth a listen INMHO.

Manek,

Why don't you look at making your own CD player

Good mechanishms are available....and good DAC modules (assembled & tested) are available

Little bit of electronic, a bit of mechanics and some software code is all it requires. Sounds very intresting to me :-).

Siva.

No...no..i'm not talking about chinese modules. I've seen those chinese modules...they are not implemented that i way i wish it should be !!

But i will look at something like this for DAC module

http://hagtech.com/hagdac.html

..and something like this for analogue output stage

http://www.lcaudio.com/index.php?page=6

You can look at converting a good "CD only" CD-ROM as a transport. A forum member also told me that some "Professional" CD mechanisms of philips were available in Mumbai..rather at a cheap rate.

Siva.
