Sony TC-K990 ES needs repairing - help needed!

Hi everyone,

I need your support with my Sony TC-K990 ES that I bought on E-bay, it needs repair or tuning of the recording controls (bias, recording level etc); it looks like somebody played with the electronics so now the device can play but the recording is totally messed up.

Can you recommend somebody that can do some 'tuning' or refurbisment?

Hi,

playback of a "foreign" recording sounds ok? Is this the case without Dolby and also with Dolby (if the recordings are made with Dolby)? If yes, playback can be used to try to adjust recording. So the trick is to adjust the recording parameters until recording -> playback sounds ok. This of course needs high quality playback of "foreign" tapes that are conform with the standard.

What is the problem with the recordings made on this machine? To analyze this a little bit better please switch of Dolby NR. Dolby as a compander system needs specified levels on recording and playback, i.e. the tape sensitivity and the recording amp have to be properly adjusted. Then use center-setting for BIAS and the small "Rec.Level" (this is tape sensitivity) nad "normal" Rec EQ.

Then do a recording with a quite standard tape (Maxell XL-II, TDK SA, BASF Chrome extra) and play it back. Is the playback quality ok?

If not: what is wrong? Too less treble, too much treble, very noisy, distorted? Too loud or very silent (compare the level meter during recording and playback)?
