How ugly are copy protected CDs? I bought this Ray Charles CD 'genius loves company'. Unfortunately, it is copy protected by EMI and won't play back normally on a computer. Are these CDs utter trouble or do they play back normally on standard CD and DVD players? Has anyone tried using them on a computer? When I tried playing it, it insisted on updating my computer system files and installing a proprietary music player. I refused. Does anyone know if these softwares harm the computer or spoil the computer operational capabilities? I don't want to risk a computer for the sake of one stupid CD. How many of these horrible lemon CDs are floating around in the Indian market? This is my first negative experience with a CD. |

I do have a lot of Copy Protected CDs...but haven't come across an issue like this. The CD might've a proprietary player software but that only optional. It should play in Windows Media player or any such software. Copy protected CDs WILL let you rip them to your computer, but WILL NOT let you make another CD out of it. They do play normally on CD players. |

Hey Neutral, I had the same problem with the same CD, a couple of months back. I upgraded my laptop this week, and the first thing I did was to try and copy and burn my Ray Charles CD. I was able to do so, with the windows media player itself. No fancy software required!! So I figure it's a problem with the older CD/DVD players. Regards, Roshan. |

That's right Roshan. Its whether the CD/DVD drive is able to rip from copy righted discs. Some DVD palyers have the ability to rip from copy righted DVDs while most donot. However, almost all the drives on the market today can rip from any CD. |

EMI Copy protected CD has drawn a lot of flak during the last 2 or 3 yrs of its existance. The worst part is the method of copy protection they have enabled, they have created gaps in the track so that most of the CD drives on computers are not able to correct this error and play the CD. When this CD is played on a CD player, the error correction mechanism of the player takes care of it, this is the reason why some of the car cd players skips some tracks on the copy protected CD's. To top it up copy protected CD do sound rougher compared to no copy protected ones. I do have copies of protected and unprotected versions of Beethovan symphonies complete set, conducted by Simon Rattle. You feel like making 100 copies of unprotected CD and sell them to music lovers free of cost so that your piracy will make a small pin prick on EMI |

I have the same disk. However, no probs whatsoever. I even copied the tracks on my eMac. Try installing iTunes on your Windows enabled PC. Might just do the trick! |

its the new CVDs which do not work.. the old Copy protection works. In fact there was an interview with the CEO of EMI on CNN recently where he confirmed the above..rather Pompous IMHO |

Thanks for the replies. The good news is that the CD does play on both my brother's old VCD minicompo and his new DVD minicompo. I'll try to copy the CD. Do I just need to use Windows Media Player or ITunes? I guess that I won't need to use any fancy raw writes with error correction turned off. BTW is it possible to do the ripping without any fuss. The dumb CD insists that I upgrade my Windows system components. And I am damm scared to do so. It just might put copy protection or some such crap on all my softwares and prevent me from using my computer normally. In the worse case, if I don't succeed, Roshan (or Mumbai based audiophile) can you please give me a copy of the Ray Charles CD. I have listened to it 4 times already and love it. I dread Jan when my brother takes away his minicompos and I am left with only a computer to play CDs and MP3s. |

Neutral, anytime. Right now I am not in town. If you give me your mailing address, I'll have my wife courier it to you.I thought the recording was quite 'verbatim". But check it out on your own. Naturally, this is for demo puposes only and you should return it after you have heard it so I can destroy the copy!!!!! (legal ASS PROTECTION) Roshan. |

Thanks Roshan, The law on fair use says that you are entitled to make one copy for your personal use if you own the CD / DVD. So no problems here When you are back in Dec ? we can share some music (only for demo purposes naturally and to be played only while I am in your house). I have Sting, Dido, Norah, Celine, Kenny G, etc. |

CDex is capable of backing up the Ray Charles CD. I am finally able to play the CD I spent so much for. I do hope that there are no flaws in the backup. |
