OKay guys, i need to decide between three types of flooring for the new audio room that is almost done.
The choices are
1>Granite
2>Vitrified Tiles
3>Wooden flooring(paneling)

Now i know that concrete and stone are innately reflective and wood is not.
the issue with the two stone types is that my parents are dead set against using carpets(maybe, just maybe a teeny one). And to me all the work till now would go to waste.
Hence, i am thingink of going for woden flooring. I would appreciate it if you guys could give me some suggestions.
Basically, it should be durable, resistant to termite, resistant to stains and should withstand daily mopping.

please suggest any solutions to either type of flooring.

The room is 16.28 x 11.875 x 10.167(LxWxH).Dimensions in feet

Cheers,
Benkenobi

Options for Flooring - Audio [Music] Listening Room :-

Hi !

You had put forth 3 options to choose from - Granite / V. Tiles / Wooden Flooring.

Between the 3 - Granite is the best from the maintainance point of view - rugged - easy to clean etc. Worst for Audio. Hence this option has to go.

V Tiles could be used by you, but you would have to cover them up with carpets & rugs at different places - that too is not possible since your parents are aginst the idea.

We are felt with the 3rd option - Wooden Flooring. This too as you suggest is not workable - since you had a paneling in mind; the kind like 'Pergo' etc. These are all 'laminated' floorings. They 'ring' & are very bad for sound.

What you need to do is as under :-

A] Cover your current floor with 12mm marine ply. Before you fix the ply in the floor have the room treated for termites [with professional injections]
B] Paint the 12mm marine ply with 'Black Japan' on both the sides.
C] Place a 2 mm to 3 mm rubber sheet on it. This has to be glued on with industrial glue - Speb type / Fevicol SR etc.
D] Real wood planks that are 4" in width & have different lengths that vary from 2' to 5'. These have to have a 'V' groove in between them [to compensate for weather change - expansion & contraction]. They have to be fixed onto the rubber + marine ply flooring by small nails.
E] The entire flooring has to be polished with a polymer based resin polish - spray. This will seal it and protect it from the 'mop' & shall make it maintainance free.

If you need any more clarifications, please do p.m. me and I supply you with other details if you want to proceed.

Please do not use any of the materials that you have suggested - the result will be desasterous.

Regards,

Wow...that was really helpful. Will your method help the sound quality? What about sound proofing?

Similarly, could you suggest something for the walls?

Thanks for that Bhagwan..very insightful.
if you could recommend me some companies which do this kind of stuff it would be great..
or would i have to hunt around for individual product and expalin the process to the guys who do the installation..?
Cheers,

Hello Ben,

Just a clarification - all the types of flooring you mentioned are reflective to sound. All are hard surfaces, and totally reflective to energy in the audio spectrum.

It seems to be a common misconception that wood is absorptive to sound. However, wood surfaces are hard and relatively smooth to audio frequencies, therefore reflective. The warmth that is associated with wood panelling and flooring is tactile in nature - easy to sight, and thermally warm in feel.

Hey Viren,
Regarding the damping ..I meant relatively ..
not that they would completely damp out sounds. I plan to have diffusers and absorbers along the side walls with one helmoltz resonator when the entire room is done..but these will be done in stages.
the coefficient of absorbtion of sound of parquetry on concrete would almost be the same as taht of concerete or tiles..but one done on wooden beams would be 3-5 times greater depending on the frequencies..am talking of frequencies below 1kHz..

Hello Ben,

By installing the wood flooring on joists, that is, with a small air cavity behind it, you will have some low frequency absorption because of sympathetic vibration of the wood panels. This vibration converts the incident sound waves to thermal energy. But this is effective only below 500Hz or so.

For absorption of sound in the mids and highs only a thick pile carpet will do on the floor, or thick drapes along the walls or windows.

Thanks for that Viren..
So parquetry on joists for lows and drapes and carpets for mids and highs..Got it!.

But i think instead of a lot of drapes..diffusers and absorbers made out of a couple of inches think fibreglass would be better for highs and mids.
The absorbtion coefficient would be greater by 34-35%.

In my experience, diffusers on the floor (Rug) as well as behind the speakers do help in better imaging as well

I thought that you would need dampers behind the speakers, not diffusers...??
could you clarify this for me..
