Hi,

I just shifted to my new apartment and I am planning to have a room dedicated to home theatre. the room was just painted and is ready to set up the equipment but I find that as there is a lot of reverb in the sound in the room (using PC speakers) due to the room being totally empty ( the room is 10 x 12 ft). How can I improve the acoustics in the room with minimal work? I was planning to have just the minimum furniture in the room, for seating and for my equipment. there's also gonna be a 80" screen for my projector. Will the acoustics improve after I have got all my stuff in?

the ideal way>>
i came across wooden fixtures designed specifically for this purpose, this absorbs the sound and thus reducing the echo to nill. I came across this fixtures at Pulz showroom in Andheri.

Hi Trivisingh,

You are a lucky guy indeed to have a dedicated room, for your HT!

An empty room is like a hall of mirrors to sound waves, they love to keep bouncing off the floor / walls. You could do a lot of things to get the best out of the room, expensive as well as inexpensive.

Simplest inexpensive way would be to throw a thick carpet on the floor to reduce floor reflections. Try to estimate the point at which waves emerging from the speakers would reflect off the side walls to arrive at your seating position, and introduce some fabric wall hangings there, as well as on the wall behind you. Thick fabric sofas will also help.

If you are looking to spend money then you could look at purpose-built bass traps and diffusers.

However, you could start with above basics and take it on from there….

If you dont want dedicated bass traps, you can try wall carpets and wooden shelves with Books/magazines.

Ideally all walls would need to have something

back wall - ideally shelves to prevent reflections behind you (Very imp)

Side walls - usually at halfway point between the speakers & the listening pint- this reduc3es side reflections

If there is a lot of Boom, put normal square cusions on all room corners imvolving the Walls & ceilings.
If there is boom still put abbsobent materials like plants, cardboard boxes in the bottom corners.

Nice plush chairs and a Carpet as suggested by big ears would complete the trick

i moved into a new flat and I overcame this problem with thick window curtains to minimize window pane or glass vibrations and a moderate sized kinda thick cloth used as a hang up.or painting what art lovers would love to address it....did serve my purpose not even a single ruppee spent...but missus..didn't like the place where I hanged the cloth painting...would be more upset when she discovers the fact that i'm using it as a tweak than a genuine appreciation of the painting itself.hehehhe....women are easy to fool.

SUB,

you state "women are easy to fool.." dont be too sure about that ! They only let you do things becuase they want you to and not because you fooled them into it.

As I always say "the dumbest woman is as smart as the smartest man !" learnt this from expereince !

You bet Manek, I thought I had convinced my Wife into buying the Quad Speakers, till she had me cornered during a regular fight. They just let you fee that they are convinced about the whole thing

Sub,

Are you sure about that?

I mean, you are not having us on, are you?

If you’ve really managed to pull off the unthinkable, you deserve a standing ovation!

Your stock has gone up substantially in my estimation....

SUB,

remember...you end up doing things what she wants you to do. They may look like its your idea and that you have fooled her....but she will always have the last laugh and say in matters....

Another thing I always believe in " Women may forgive but they never forget !" They could beat an elephant in a memory power contest !

yup...then it seems i don't need a standing ovation.but atleast...it happened without too many of exchange of opinons who knows she might be chuckling within her heart when she looks at the painting and thinks it saved her the pain of hanging it on the wall as i did it for her......for the acoustics........nope may be for her
