Großer Kontrast und für OLEDs sehr hell Das von LG Display entwickelt und gefertigte, flexible und sehr dünne OLED-Panel liefert auf einer Diagonale von 45 Zoll die UWQHD-Auflösung von 3.440 × 1.440 Pixeln im 21:9-Format. Typisch für die OLED-Technik ist das hohe Kontrastverhältnis, das Corsair mit 1.350.000:1 angibt. Durch komplette Abschaltung einzelner Pixel wird „echtes“ Schwarz ermöglicht, während bei LCDs immer noch etwas das Backlight hindurch scheint. Die Helligkeit ist bei OLED-Displays dagegen meist geringer. Beim Xeneon Flex soll die komplette Bildfläche (100 %) zwar mit nur bis zu 150 cd/m² leuchten. Aber punktuell seien je nach beleuchteter Fläche in der Spitze 450 cd/m² (25 % der Bildfläche), 800 cd/m² (10 %, HDR) bis hin zu 1.000 cd/m² (3 %, HDR) möglich. Eine neue HDR-Klassifizierung (HDR Rating) sei in Arbeit. 0,03 ms Reaktionszeit und 240 Hz Bei den Reaktionszeiten sind OLEDs wieder klar im Vorteil gegenüber den vergleichsweise trägen Flüssigkristallanzeigen. Zumindest auf dem Papier erreicht der Corsair Xeneon Flex mit nur 0,03 ms beim Wechsel zwischen Graustufen (GtG) neue Bestwerte. Selbst die schnellsten LCDs kommen nicht unter 0,5 ms. In Kombination mit einer hohen Bildwiederholrate von 240 Hz sollen Spiele entsprechend flüssig und nahezu schlierenfrei dargestellt werden. Die Latenz beim An- oder Ausschalten eines Pixels soll sogar nur 0,01 ms betragen. Im selben Atemzug ist von einer Technik namens „Motion Blur Canceling“ die Rede, die „Bewegungsunschärfe effektiv eliminiere“. Gegen ein Bildzerreißen (Tearing) wird zudem ein Abgleich der Bildrate von Grafikkarte und Monitor via AMD FreeSync Premium und Nvidia G-Sync (kompatibel) unterstützt. Mit Garantie gegen „Burn-in“ Das mit einer Reflexionen mindernden Beschichtung versehene OLED-Panel soll 10 Bit Farbtiefe und ein großes Farbspektrum (rund 99 % DCI-P3) aufweisen. Der bei OLEDs herrschenden Gefahr eines „Einbrennens“ statischer Bildinhalte soll ein „burn-in prevention system“ entgegen wirken. Die dreijährige Garantie sichert gegen Burn-in sowie defekte Pixel ab.

LG beendet diesen Monat die LCD-Produktion der P7-Anlage in Paju (hauptsächlich 43"- und 50"-Panels) und zusätzlich wird die Produktion von LCD-Panels in den 8G-Anlagen reduziert. Dazu ist ein schrittweiser Übergang zu OLED geplant, da bestehende LCD-Fabriken auf OLED umgerüstet werden können:

LG Display wird in diesem Monat sein Werk Paju P7 schließen, in dem große LCD-Panels hergestellt wurden. Es wird erwartet, dass der Paju P8 in Zukunft nur noch LCD-IT-Panels und LCD-TV-Panels im Werk Guangzhou in China produzieren wird.

Es ist bekannt, dass die Produktionskapazität für LCD-Panels des Werks in Guangzhou ebenfalls um etwa 40 % von 210.000 (210.000) Blatt pro Monat auf 120.000 (120.000) Blatt pro Monat reduziert wird, basierend auf dem Input von Glasscheiben der 8.5. Generation. Das Werk Guangzhou in China besteht aus GP1 und GP2.

In der Branche wird geschätzt, dass LG Display in die Umwandlung des P7 in eine OLED-Linie für Fernseher investieren und frühestens 2026 mit der Massenproduktion beginnen wird. Wenn LG Display das P7 herunterfährt, wird die gesamte inländische Produktion von LCD-TV-Panels abgeschlossen sein. Samsung Display beendete sein LCD-Geschäft in der ersten Hälfte des vergangenen Jahres.

CES 2023 LG Display Describes OLED Innovations for 2023
In a special briefing in LG Display's private suite, we learned more about the innovations is is bringing to OLED displays for TVs. The tour started with picture quality comparisons between miniLED panels, QD-OLED panels and LGD's WOLED panels. miniLEDs so blooming and lack of color accuracy. In dark lumiance scenes, red patches show correctly with WOLED but look greenish with QD-OLED, due to dithering. They also showed that with a light illuminating the QD-OLED at a sharp off angle, the black levels rise due to quantum dot activation due to a lack of a polarizer on these panels, but it is unclear if more normal room illumination will have a similar effect.

The next demo highlighted the G2 (2022) panel, the G3 (2023) panel and a future G4 (2024) panel. The G3 adds a microlens array (MLA) while the G4 will add META Boost technology. The META boost technology is an algortithm that is currently limited to boosting brightness for average picture level (APL) of 25% or higher. The G4 version will boost all APL levels.

LGD says there are 42.5 billion microlens in a display or 5000 per pixel with the diameter of each lens on the order of 10 microns. An image of a sub-pixels suggested more like 100 lens per sub-pixel not thousands, so maybe that was not a real image. The advantage of the MLA architecture is a 60% boost in brightness and a 30% increase in viewing angle.

G3 peak luminance will be around 2100 nits with the MLA technology (probably in a very samll window in vivid mode). Adding the META boost technology for 2024 will drive that same luminance level to 3000 nits, claims LGD.

A separate demo of a 98" minLED TV vs. their 97" OLED TV was used to illustrate the much faster response time of an OLED - no surprise there.

CES 2023 LG Display Highlights Monitor and Transparent Panels
LG Display showcased their monitor and transparent panels in a private suite at CES 2023. They started with a comparison between miniLED-based gaminmg monoitors vs. OLED gaming monitors. They highlighted the 100x faster response of OLED but then also highlighted the new ClearMR metric developed by VESA. This metric is much better than MPRT and other response measurements which were subject to cherry piclking result. ClearMR sets a warm up time, measurment temperature range and averaging of measurements to provide more accurate result. At CES, LG noted that three new levels were added to the ClearMR range to accommodate the great response of their curved gaming monitor (see separte video on VESA for more).

A second cvomparuison was between a curved WOLED and curved QD-OLED gaming monitor. They showed how ambient illumination can raise the black level and distoirt the colors. The said that WOLED can be more tightly curved than QD-OLED as well.

Three ways to curve the monitor were shown. The most expensive way is to use a motor, but there were two manual methods too. One used a lever to adjust the curvature while the other featured handles on each side of the display. Different genres of content require different curvatures.

Moving to transparent displays, 30" and 77" OLED transparent displays are now on the roadmap for 2023 to join the 55" currently available. The 30" will probably also be offered as a gaming monitor and maybe a TV panel. Transmissivity is improved from 40% to 45% and brightness from 400 to 600 nits.
