Super Deluxe Box

On September 23, Virgin Records will release an expanded and remastered edition of Adore that will include an immense 6 CDs, and an included DVD. This repackage of Adore, a part of the band’s campaign to create definitive editions of their catalog, will include newly remastered stereo and mono versions of the entire album, as well as 3 CDs filled with unreleased material from the sessions and other places. The DVD will be the filmed An Evening With The Smashing Pumpkins from their 1998 tour.

Audio Fidelity

The first two 5.1 releases are Al Kooper - Super Session & George Benson - Breezin'. Steve Hoffman will be doing the stereo DSD and CD mastering for both. The 5.1 mixes and the 5.1 mastering appear to be previously completed work -- unreleased in the case of Super Session (Al Kooper/Bob Ludwig) and apparently the same as the previous DVD-A for Breezin' (Al Schmitt/Doug Sax).

Die Hürden die Independent Labels überspringen müssen, sind weniger die Suche nach den Original Tapes, sondern die Personen dahinter. Es kann zwar das Label das Okay geben, aber es gibt ja noch die Künstler, Manager und Anwälte, die ihr Veto einlegen können

Genau die richtigen Summer-Compilations

Einen Klangvergleich habe ich bisher noch nicht durchgehend gemacht, aber einige Kommentare aus dem SH-Forum.

...on "Get It On" is the original version of "LIGHT MY FIRE" by the Doors at the original speed (the correct speed that they recorded it at). First release ever.

...the SACD of "Crank It Up" includes the original 1967 stereo album mix of "Nights In White Satin".


Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way" schlägt den Song auf der Original CD eindeutig....


SH-Kommentar:
Normally a comp should "flow", both in song content and in sound quality. Since these comps had already been released on regular compact disk, the song order was in stone and since I (rightly or wrongly) figured that most of you would be buying this for sound quality in high resolution (first time for most of these songs) that I would leave the sound the way the producer/artist intended in the first place and not try and make them all sound alike for ease of transition. Understand that? A deliberate decision on my part.

It was a true bitch to work on these two SACD's. Fun as well. Every song had to be mastered from scratch for DSD. That meant we called in a lot of favors from studios all over the world. They all came through. Some of you might have a scope. Take a look. All DSD masterings.

If your favorites are on these disks, enjoy. If you don't like a song, skip over it. The song selection was NOT ours, it was from Time-Life. A few songs on here I couldn't care less about, that's the nature of a comp., not everything on it is going to float your boat. But, I doubt you'll hear DANIEL or HOW LONG (by Ace) this pure sounding again. This is full bandwidth, no restricted dynamics, no funky top end treble boost, no bass thinning, no "smoothing tricks", just good (if I do say so) DSD mastering. The CD section is the same tonality, split feed as the DSD section was being mastered.

I tried to put every long album version of the songs on the disks until I ran out of space. Such is life.

Stephen Marsh is the one who worked overtime on this project, getting the studios to speak to each other about sources, etc. All him.

Once again, enjoy. These SACD's were meant to showcase each individual song and they are not homogenized with each other, in other words, I didn't EQ the entire package to sound alike. This is probably the only time you will ever be able to hear some of these "one-off" tracks sound like this in pure high resolution. All can be cranked for the most part without ear bleed.

Enjoy each song for what it is. When you play SPILL THE WINE really loud, better watch out!

Den Grund kann ich Dir (noch) nicht mitteilen. Nur so viel.... zu viele Köche verderben den Brei. Das Ding wurde schon von Kevin Gray remastert. Viel schlimmer ist, das die Original CD sehr bescheiden klingt und von den bisher zwei erschienenen Scorpions AF-Titel, hätte Blackout am meisten vom neuen Remastering profitiert.

Gerade im Blu-ray Player.....

Hervorragender Remix by Bob Clearmountain. Die Original Island CD braucht ich nicht mehr!

Danke für die Antwort. Schade wieder eine SACD worauf ich mich riesig gefreut habe die nicht kommt (wie die SACD von Reckless).

Gerade auf dem Plattenteller Rush "Presto" (Audio Fidelity)... gutes Mastering und lässt die Original Atlantic CD alt aussehen.

Die Renaissance "Scheherazade" SACD klingt eindeutig besser als das Friday Music CD/DVD Set.

Im Gegensatz zu MFSL erscheinen auch (fast) alle Ankündigungen pünktlich

The Kinks announce 50th anniversary reissue campaign

To mark their 50th anniversary, The Kinks have announced details of an extensive re-release programme covering their classic 1964-1970 catalogue.
The first album in the series will be 1970’s Lola Versus Powerman And The Moneygoround, Part One, which will be reissued on August 18.
This 2-CD reissue expanded edition comes with Mono and Stereo mixes as well as unreleased material and alternative versions, all re-mastered from original tapes by Kinks archivist Andrew Sandoval. The booklet contains rare and unreleased images from the era plus new extensive liner notes. Disc 2 features the 1971 soundtrack album Percy which is also packed with fantastic bonus content.

Lola Versus Powerman And The Moneygoround, Part One will be followed by more titles later in the year. The reissue campaign is being masterminded by BMG, who acquired The Kinks catalogue when it bought Sanctuary Records in 2013. BMG has partnered with Sony Music for the release programme.

Review eines mir vertrauten SH Forum-User.....

"I am just listening to the Stereo version of "Shades of Deep Purple" and I am comparing it to my (so far) preferred digital version, the first Japanese pressing.

My preferred digital Versions (so far) are:
Shades of Deep Purple - 1st Japanese CD (the EMI is from a needledrop and doesn't sound that good in my opinion)
The Book of Taliesyn - 1st Japanese CD (the EMI is from a needledrop and doesn't sound that good in my opinion)
Deep Purple - non-remastered EMI UK CD (but it has some clicks during "The Bird Has Flown", the 1st Japanese pressing is similar, but I slightly prefer the EMI)

Here are my first impressions (for "Shades..."):

Dynamics are really good (as the numbers suggest), I don't hear any compression/limiting. Nice.

The new mastering sounds quite different from the old Japanese CD. The midrange is better presented on the new mastering I think. Overall, the new mastering sounds "flatter" (not sure how to describe it best). The Japanese CD almost has a midrange suckout, but it has a nice low end, but it almost sounds a bit boomy in the low end in comparison. The Japanese CD sounds more distant, like the music is playing from more far away.

All in all, I can't say 100% which one I like better, both sound good to me. But I'm leaning towards the new mastering at the moment.

More comparisons will follow as I get to the other albums."



"Now on to their self-titled third album.

The new mastering is very nice, and I prefer it over the old EMI CD, which has been my preferred digital version so far.

It is not a huge sonic difference, but the new mastering is a tad less bright and overall really nice sounding. The new CD has a little bit louder volume level, but it is not due to compression/limiting, dynamics are at least as good as on the old CD.

All in all, I highly recommend this new set. All the Deep Purple Mark I you'll ever need in one handy package with great sonics.

Kudos to Andy Pearce for a great Job."

24/96 NAGRA. Then bumped down to 16 bit for mastering back in the day. Stephen found the actual Nagra stuff at Olympic, UK, thanks to Bob Ludwig.
Going the extra mile. We call it "going off campus", in other words, licensing something from a company and then tracking down the goods somewhere else. Done it many times but Stephen is the master of finding rare digital mixes BEFORE they are compiled, compressed and EQ'd on a digital cutting master and then actually finding the old digital machines to play back the stuff.
