What are the consequences of zero duty on components on hardware products(both finished and components)on the Hi-Fi industry,in India.India is a sigatory to WTO.(And this is a mandatory under WTO)
I see two things.
1.Prices to reduce,by at least the import duty, that is cut,and thereby bringing them to international levels.
2.More manufacturers start assemebling(if not manufacturing),the unit's in India, rather sooner than later. And further price cuts in finished products.
Any thoughts?

No duty in the sense do we get the product without any tax?

say if a product is priced at $499 in US then normally it will cost around Rs.36k in india.

if there is zero duty regime then do i get the product for the same price( i.e Rs.25k) ?

local taxes will still be applicable...only customs duty and excise will be waived off I think.

BTW the example of $499 is the retail price in the Us inclusive of taxes and markups so ideally we should get them on par or lower.

i think u guys are jumping your guns.

there will be duty cuts across a wide range of products if(that's a big if) India agrees to come under WTO control over all products.
there are a wide range of issues to be dealt with. without getting into the economic aspect i would say that there would be restrictions on the type and range of products that will be marked for duty cuts.

if in fact the duty cuts is made applicable to all products(electronics) the Government will be losing money and will in turn add some other tax to these products in hopes of recovering their revenue.am i not right?
i mean come on, the custom and duty taxes contribute considerably to the GDP and to presume that there won't be any duty would be premature. we simply will have to wait and watch.

Sdhawan,

Hi I sure am here....and still optimistic as cadence imports a lot of stuff from abroad like cables, drivers, binding posts, etc....so I think there would be some price cut....ofcourse if they want to stan in buisness they will have to price their products accordingly so there is hope for cadence fans as well.

incidentally been to pune over the weekend and two dealers claim that prices might go up. for quad and cadence. dont know how far thats true or if its a ploy to get me to decide fast. cadence guy said he's been maintaining the price point for quite a while so might increase it soon.

"There’s some cool news for those who have been holding back on purchases of air-conditioners, top-end audio and video products.

Peak customs duty has been cut, which will reduce prices of imported consumer durable products. Excise duty on ACs has been cut via abolition of 8% special excise duty, bringing the excise component to 16%. "

Extract from today's economic times.

How much would it affect Hi-Fi prices, in general?
Thanks.

its just dropped by 5% from 20% to 15% so i dont think it'll make any difference. i doubt the importers/dealers will pass on the benefits to customers

well he would be able to pass it over only in case he had imported it in recently. if the stock is from last year then there may not be a way he can pass that over !

No,if he has to pass on the benefit, to the customer,it has to be irrespective of the old stock or new stock.
If the customer insists on new stock, then what he will do with the old stock?

Thats exactly why he will dispose of the old stock first. Dealer/importers dont import at the drop of a hat and at the convinience of the customer. Their consignments take a long while to arrive and sell in the market. If the consumer wants new stock then he would have wait for one or be lied to that the old stock is new stock.

Either way there is no way a 5% drop wil be passed on to the customer which anyways would amount to only 1000 rupees for a 20,000/- purchase. i would be quite surprised to see a price drop due to drop 5% drop in customs duty. Yes there could be a price drop due to competition in the local market !
