Hi

I would like to know is it advisable to buy Nad320BEE amp in US as I am planning to get it from US through my friend, but in one of the review I read that if we use a voltage converter it will reduce the performance, is it true or just a belief.
please reply back as soon as possible as I need to convey the same to my frend in US.

Hi Srini,

In US, it costs from 350$ to 400$, but try with www.hipposaudiovideo.com , it is 359$ including shipping & taxes., or you can try dmc-electronics.com , - 365$.
Even I have got plans of buying in US, but not yet decided!!!

Cheers,
Hemanth.

Hi guys but how are gonna solve the voltage problem.if it has a switch at the back for conversioni.e 110v to 220v. then even I want one NAD320 .

Hi SubBoss,
One of my friend has a Denon Receiver(got from us), for which he has got a very good step down, and he did a lot of research on that and found that in Bangalore, some of the high end recording studios are using the 110V related audio devices with very good step downs.

Cheers,

Guys...

Last year I bought a Hi end 900 MHz wireless headphones from the US. I lovingly used it in Bombay with a step up transformer for a while but one night I forgot to switch it off and the 12v AC/DC transformer it came with blew up. I ran all over town to get an original and finally tried it with a regular 12v transformer from the market with matching Amperage. It works just fine.

Remember, we are not just talking voltage, also frequency change from 50Hz to 60Hz.

By default, never by anything from the US for India, better to buy from the Gulf or Singapore. It's cheaper too.

A tep down/Step up is not a good idea with a Good Hifi setup. The output of an Amplifier actually mirrirs the characteristic of the input power and hence bad power means bad quality of audio

US products are meant for 110Volts 50 Hz while here us will get 220V 60 Hz (Give or take a few volts and hz )
Hence even with a stepdown transformer the freq would still not be taken care of and hence would not work too well.

Would suggest you buy a 220 V versio or else buy the US version and see if any local DIY enthusiast can mod the power supply t0 220V (A slightly riskier proposition IMHO)

Using step down transformer for Hifi is not a taboo provided you use a good quality transformer with sufficient VA rating. Sufficient VA means the transformer should be capable of supplying the peak current demanded by the power amp, which at times may go upto 6 times the rated current . The capacity of a transformer to provide high short term current without dropping its output voltage is directly proportionate to its output impedence which in turn again depends on the KVA rating. So you may end up with a very big ie 4KVA plus rated stepdown to power your 50W amp.

Another point you have to consider is that it is easier to make a better power amp that is powered by a 230v supply than a 110v supply. This is because of the lower current requirment for producing the same power at higher input voltage. W = VxI.

Frequency of 50 hz and 60Hz do not call for a different power tranformer design and do not affect the quality of amp.

If you consider all these factors it will be better to get a 230 V power amp. Small signal devices are at times better performed when supplied by a stepdown transformer because of the noise filtering and isolation provided by the transformer.

You are right about the amp, if the power supply and rectification is good the power should not be a very critical aspect.

Interestingly, I believe what the frequency affects is the CDP as apparently it can affect the clock timing and hence increase the jitter..although why , i have no Idea. Did ask in a forum, the answer i got was that rectified dc is not pure DC and hence clocks do not consider them the same..

You comment on the instantaneous power are spot on..thats what affects the dynamics and the "air" of music
