Hey all,

Had the opportunigty to test the Plinius with my diamond 8.4s..for a full day ...
The amp is really good..but then again..makes me wonder if it is worth the 3000$ price tag...
teh abss is almost ubelivable..easily the strongest selling point for me ....the mids and especially the highs were a bit of a let down...then again i feel ehh wharfies are not the speakers to judge them by...but the wharfies stay true to their reputations..the amp gets pretty warm for just 15 to 20 mins of play time..
One thing i could easily make out was taht in some sequences the spaeker just falls apart it is not able to keep up with the amp...But this amp out does most of the commercial aps i have heard so far...was a nice exsperence..unfortunately have to leave or mysore within the hour...can't f\wait for friday...

I too hear a Plinius amp at Adelphi, in Spore a couple of years ago.

My impression was of a clean sounding, detailed amplifier. However, what stood out ( not necessarily in a positve way ) was that the extreme treble was rolled off. Symbals lacked a sizzle, and sheen.

But I was hearing all this on unknown speakers and CD source, so that audition dosent count for much, and certainly not the basis of a solid long term opinion. Would ofcourse Love to hear the stuff again.

Lovely styling, and clean looks.

it's a bloody useless amplifier! IMHO, you are wasting your time w/ it.
I auditioned this amp in my system several years ago when I was looking for an amp myself.
The bass is a 1-note bass - boom-boom-boom. Makes me think that an incompetent musician like myself could play great bass if it were amplified by a Plinius 8200!
The mid was the best part of the amp comparing all 3 regions but falls short of their other amp like the SA100 Mk3 or even their best SA250 Mk4.
The high freq region of this amp is dismal - totally rolled off.
Next time you hear this amp tell me what you think of the soundstage depth & width & height?
Run your favourite torture tracks thru it before you make any conclusions.

yeah once Ive auditioned the Plinius amp at siva and it was fine with the mids but the treble was almost down not very clear
even though the drivers are ultimate but i dont really understand why is he driving the plinius with the tube pre amp... I felt it was too much good syndrome..

Hey Sivat,

Why do you do such things,,now listen to the expert and better pull your socks up and listen to industry experts.

BTW Sivat is that one of your DIY tube pre's.

I would be very surprised if two audio enthusiasts had the exact same opinion of one component

For me, my experience with the smaller plinius (I think it was the 9100) has been very good. I thought it sounded very well along with a JMR Trente.. although I was more into the fast Bass thing for a lower cost then and hence went for a Klipsch.

But I am pretty sure I did not find anything wrong either with the bass or with the treble and what really struck out to me was the smoothness and the way it played strings. but that is all I rememnber of it.. my memory in Audio is not very good ..i just remember some aspects

I have not heard the 8200 so I reserve my comments.
But the SA series power amp with siva is a different animal altogether. I have had the opportunity to listen on the same speakers with different amps including the SA series Pwr amp with same music at different times and all I can say is the the plinius digs out detail like no other. There is one Jazz cd I have (forgot the exact name) which sounds screechy in most setups including mine. I played the same track at siva’s place and I was surprised to hear detailed notes which sounded quite musical. The bass has layers of detail and sounds tight.

Fortunately I had the opportunity to listen to the Plinius 8100 with a Dynaudio Audience52 and WOW.......its something that I have never heard till date. I mean there were some aspects like Imaging, Strings tonality, Dissapearing act of a speaker etc....which were just so perfect and so evident that even a layman who has never been exposed to hifi would immediately feel them. The bass was real Gooood!!!! Goes deep and tight whenever there are things to express in Bass notes. Highs were shining with a sparkle and mids were just awesome though a bit more pronounced with the Dyns. Vocals and Pianos I heard on them could never sound so Surreal.....Wah....maan gaye!!!! .

The CD player used was a NAD C521. The combo was just out of this world......

Could not understand ... the link between the perceived weakness of Plinius and Valve preamp. So unable to comment here. (SUBOSS, yes, i think Sonic Master is referring to our preamp)

I have not felt that Plinius is rolling off the high frequency. This is what Sam Tellig mentioned about this power amp...but i personally do not buy that review (friends, this is my personal opinion...so don't jump on me) !!

I'm personally very happy with this power amp. However, there are a few people who prefer a krell like (American ??) sound over the Plinius. Its a personal choice at the end of the day :-)

What i really like about Plinius ... Dynamics & its ability to hold the details together and create a very musical presentation.

If you enjoy Ella, Ben Webster, Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong.....then this is the amp to beat !!

Cheers
Siva.

Hi siva and Subboss Im not addressing anything bad about plinius but I feel the sheen is too soft in highs. The SS HF driver what siva uses is very soft. BTW it was one of the best systems that Ive ever auditioned. But when siva said that he uses first order xover for the speakers.

I felt that its will be fine and safe to use the 2nd order crossover and reverse the tweeter polarity to optimise the phase shift at the same time the roll of will be enough good and the tweeter will be much stable at high power.

But im really intrested to know why did you use the 1st order crossover for the tweeter that too the xover freq is way too down...

I would like to hear from you about this siva...

cheers,
Sandeep
