This IS a tall order... !

Probably the iPod Headphones are the best you will get on this rather limited budget... ( Though I am not sure of their price.

True..
High end earphones would be something like Beyerdynamic/ Audio Technica..
But ur budget would have to be 15-20 times ur present to get real hgih end ones.

Hi Sonic,
For that price in India you should try the Philips SHP-805.
Its a closed headphone. Its the best I could find in under 2.5k atleast in Bangalore. Sennheiser and its likes are very over-priced in India. I have recently bought my first set of headphones. I did quite a bit of research before buying mine. First I also looked at Sennheiser but would you believe a $25 headphone was being retailed at Rs.2400........ , not only that the storekeeper also made sure to make me feel that he is the only guy who has such high-end headphones and if I dont buy it from him then I am NOWHERE...
All bull-shit man...........
If you are buying from India, look at the philips model I have mentioned above, it beats the pants off the Sennheiser model I auditioned for 2.4k. This philips merely costs 1100 bucks btw.

i don't think a philips headphone will beat pants off hd 202, or any in the hd range for that matter. i have not heard philips closed headphones, but heard some decent ones from sony and koss. sennheisers really have a clean bass. but, everyone likes their own thing.

hi abhi,

since you had recommended philips before in a previous post i went to see the philips 805. they looked like damn flying saucers! so huuge! no demo unfortunately. this was at the jayanagar showroom. i settled for sony streetstyle. fits firmly when walking. which is what i use it for. sound is pretty decent.

hahaha very true but have heard it and really gets you to neutral reproduction and can't just beat it in that price range...BTW guys why are we hanging around here as Sonic is not around and by the time he has picked up headphones and drowned in music..

Hey Stevie and others,
Its true that the Philips are big and is not reccommended for jogging, but listen to this particular MODEL and you know its different from all the other Philips you have heard till date....
Hey Koushik, I know the Senns are well respected, but I think you should reserve your comments till you hear this particular model SHP-805 from philips.
Sony is normally bright and very unnatural (except for high end ones), its the typical hip-hop sound in Sony with Boom Boom bass. But this philips is natural sounding and gives you a kick of hifi sound.

Abhi,

On an impulsive buy and reading about your experience with them, I picked up the philips 805 headphones from a music shop without audition. Must say they are way, way ahead of what I expected for 1100/- rupees. What stood out most was no ear fatigue even after 3+ hours of continuous listening ! Sweet sounding headphones,,,may not have the ultimate in resolution but I cant ask for more for 1k. Now thats VFM.

Oh...thats great buddy...thank God your impulsive purchase didnt go wrong else I would be the culprit..

Ya, I would tell you they were one of the best available for under 3k in the Indian local market during my research, atleast if you are looking for natural balanced sound. People sometimes undermine Philips when looking at Senns and other big brands but headphones like SHP-805 are gems which is difficult to go wrong with while still a total VFM product.

Do let us know more about your experience with these cans as you break it in.

Hi,

I did put the headphones thru a gentle yet longish burn in y'day and heard them today morning.....
It did make a bit of a difference in the low end and the highs...low end more defined....highs a little clearer. Lets see if things improve further....

Abhi BTW in your headphone hunt did you come across any VFM headphone amps ?

Though I didnt hunt for headphone amps but I did come across a few good ones at head-fi.com, but I am not sure where we can get them in India. One is known as PA2V2, its said to be one of the best VFM amp..around $60. If you are really interested then let me know and I will send you a list in PM.

abhi....I wonder who sells VFM headphone amps in India.

BTW on the burn in process...last night I surprisingly found the headphones very bloated and ill defined in the bass....I was taken aback. This burn in process seems to be doing the opposite of what it is supposed to do. will put them through a few more more hours.

Its funny but true...!

value for money would mean the maximum bang for the buck.. the bang would have obvious limitations at that buck
IMHO the best bet is $69 for a GradoSR 60 IF you can get it procured from the US ...

BTW I was recently trying out the B&O A8 ear phone out of curiosity.. has a very luxurious sound and feel to it. although the sound of the Shure/etymotic is better, this is luxurious definitely not VFM though

Manek, This is what i found to be quite true in many head/earphones. I guess it is those phones which strike you as having less bass initially which are the most relaxing and comfortable over the long term.

eg the B&0 has its specs rated only 50 Hz to 20khz at 3 dB.. which is quite realistic to expect and hence the smooth feel.
Thats exactly the reason I liked the entry level Beyer and the Grado headphones as well.

Arj,
Manek is looking for VFM headphone amps...not headphones.

Talking about SR-60, yah they are good but they are too subjective.....with the Grado Rock type sound + some harshness beacuse of its entry level status, I believe it would require atleast 200+ hours of burn in to sound smooth.
My MS-1 took ages to break in but now it sounds SURREAL and damn involving....
Basically at a price range of $70 you get many other good choices as well like Sennheiser HD-280 PRO, Sony MDR-V6, Koss etc...But the thing is going upto that budget is not easy when you dont have the option of listening to it before buying...just seems too impulsive and risky..

well abhi,,,,the philips are playing tricks again....put them on an extended burn all of saturday, close to 12 hours...about 8hrs on Sunday and by Sunday evening....the bass had gotten more tunefull and in control. This roller coaster ride is really amusing One gets so much fun out of 1K.
