I finally managed to find one dvd with the above combo. Always wanted to hear/see Kleiber with this orchestra he is said to have a soft corner for. Its a wonderful orchestra. I can now relate to what all the fuss is about. The orchestra layout is also a little different from the usual in the sense there are the strings spread across the stage from left to the right in about 3 to 4 rows without the double basses, wind/horn section in the center of the stage but behind the string section and the double basses way back in the last row along with the percussions. Shaped somewhat like an hourglass. It does offer a overall warm glow and packs a great punch when required like in the colriolan. The bass lays the foundation on which the rest of the sound is built. Almost similar to the placement the great pierre monteux used to use for his studio recordings.

Upto now my exposure of Kleiber was limited to only with the Vienna philharmonic and Concertgebouw.

Coriolan overture is quite fabulously portrayed.

Brahms 4th symphony I though was the icing on the cake. I had always rated kleiber's brahms 4th with vienna philharmonic as one of the best recordings of the work but this one on the dvd surpasses the vienna one.

Guys n Gals, this one is a must buy in my books especially for the kleiber fans and for people who want to listen to a fabulous orchestral performance.

Manek,
I have heard of him but never heard Kleiber. If he is availble on mainstream CD, I would be interested. Anything would be OK except Beethoven and Brahms. A Bruckner performance would be useful since I only have the Karajan set.

Am listening to some excellent Haydn (Kodaly Quartet), on Naxos as I write.

You have got to hear kleiber. Very limited in his repertoire but is up there with the best and many times a class apart. From what I know he has released very few recordings but each one a gem and a collectors item.

The recordings available currently are mostly kleiber conducting beethoven, brahms, mozart and couple of operas. I intend to collect kleibers recordings whether I have them or not. His recordings very often overshadows the stuff I already own and love :-)

I don't know if he has recorded any bruckner work. He should have. A google search would tell you. His 1992 new year concert dvd at vienna is just out of this world. This guy even aced the waltzes and marches.

Yes he is available on mainstream cd, on DG.
Trust me, he isn't just an audiophile phenomenon :-), (read beethoven 5th), but truly a genius. It also just happens that his work is generally well recorded too.

Hey Manek, I thought that distinction belonged to 1812 Overture.

Cannons, Church Bells, Choir... full on stuff.

P.S- you must comment on the Orff prgramme essayed by the SOI...

1812 is so overdone :-) probably as much as "marche slave" by PT too.
Nevertheless wonderfully written pieces, both of them.

about carmina burana.....good performance but lacked the chorus might that a work like this should have. Unfortunately its hugely difficult to put together a sizable chorus in mumbai for a work like this so we must be content what what was on offer.

Enjoyable evening nevertheless. The SOI grows from strength to strength. Amen.

Reading on the internet about Gunter Wand, he is supposed to be one of the foremost exponents of bruckner, apart from the usual Karajan and Jochum.

I believe Gunter Wand recorded a delightfull bruckner 8th symphony.

I mention this, because carlos kleiber is said to have regarded Wand very highly for Bruckner(which I read on the internet).

Ps: didn't find any bruckner recordings on google though I believe kleiber has done a couple of brucker symphony recordings with vienna philharmonic.
